To maintain consistent production and current genetic influence the Farm focuses heavily on reproductive performance within the cow herd. The use of Artificial insemination and Embryo Transfer are key elements of the operation. A tremendous amount of reproductive pressure is placed on cows and they must perform consistently to maintain their place in the herd. Donor cows are typically flushed twice, twenty eight days apart and then bred back to maintain a respectable calving interval. All purebred cows are Time AI’d once and monitored for heats on the subsequent cycle before being exposed to a herd bull for 30 days. All embryo recipient cows are cycled twice concurrently with the Donor cows and then also exposed to herd bull for 30 days. This process is performed twice a year in November and April to provide the Farm with two calving seasons. This allows for some diversity in age of performance ready cattle twice a year, while at the same time allowing an option to roll over any cows that may have not settled to the next season. This roll over practice is tolerated only in years when there is ample forage, and lower than desired cattle prices. This option is only allowed for the best cows in the herd. However, no options are given to heifers. Any and all open heifers are marketed once it is determined they are not pregnant.

This was our first acquisition when Sarratt Farms was started, and it continues to be one of the best decisions we ever made. She is our top revenue generator and a very prolific producer. Averaging 18.8 embryos per flush it’s easy to see why we choose her as a foundation female. Her calves grow well, scan well, function well and sell well. She is by far our most popular cow and her progeny are difficult to keep due to demand. She does everything right and to date we haven’t found a mating that didn’t work with her.

This Erica cow is special. She is royally bred and it shows. To date she has only weaned one calf but if it continues to progress she will soon join her mother in the Donor lineup. She is the type of cow that is difficult to mate because it’s hard to improve on perfection.
